BMW G80 M3, G82 M4 Oil Change Guide

Oil changes are a fundamental part of your car’s routine maintenance. Fortunately, changing the oil on your BMW G80 M3 or G82 M4 is not terribly difficult or expensive, and the average DIY’er can do this in their driveway in under an hour.

Compatibility: G80 M3 / G82 M4 / G83 M4

Supplies: 5W-30 oil (7 liters), oil filter. Purchase our G80 M3 oil change kit here

Tools Required: Low profile floor jack, jack stands, drain pan, 17mm socket, 32mm socket, T6 Torx, torque wrench, pick tool. Shop our selection of tools here

Time to complete: ∼30 minutes

The S58 engine in the G80 M3 uses 7 Liters of 5W-30 oil. We are using Liqui Moly Special Tec oil with a Hengst oil filter. Be sure that whichever oil you choose has the BMW Longlife 01 FE certification. We’re also Liqui Moly Ceratec which is an oil additive. To make it easy for you, we sell an oil change kit that includes everything you need (buy here).

Step 1

Remove the oil fill cap to allow the oil to drain quickly and thoroughly.

Step 2

Remove the drain plug cover by turning it counterclockwise, then remove the 17mm drain plug.

Step 3

While the oil is draining, replace the crush washer on the drain plug with the new one supplied with the oil filter.

Step 4

Reinstall drain plug and torque it to 25NM. Reinstall the plastic cover.

Step 5

To access the oil filter, remove the two T6 Torx screws to move the coolant reservoir out of the way.

Step 6

Use a 32mm socket to remove the oil filter cap. Place a towel at the base of the oil filter housing to catch any drips.

Step 7

Remove the old oil filter from the filter cap and replace the O-ring on the cap. Be sure to install the new O-ring into the correct groove. Lubricate the new O-ring with fresh oil.

Step 8

Install the new oil filter into the filter cap and lubricate the small O-ring with fresh oil.

Step 9

When reinstalling the oil filter into the filter housing, line up the notch on the filter with the corresponding hole in the housing.

Step 10

Torque the filter cap to 25.5NM, then reinstall the two T6 Torx screws to secure the coolant reservoir.

Step 11

Fill the engine with new oil. We also added Liqui Moly Ceratec, for extra protection. Replace the oil fill cap.

Resetting Oil Service Light

Step 1

With the hood and doors closed and the key inside the car, triple press the start/ stop button. This puts the car into diagnostic mode.

Step 2

Press and hold the BC button for 15 seconds to enter the service mode.

Step 3

Cycle through the settings until you see “Engine Oil.” Press and hold the BC button for 10 seconds. Confirm that you want to reset, then press and hold the BC button once more.

Note that if the car says “reset impossible” you may need to set the date and time on your car’s clock.

BMW recommends changing the oil at 10,000 miles, but since we modify our cars and drive them hard, we change ours every 5,000 miles to ensure maximum protection and longevity.
