Some of you may have heard of the terms "dry" and "wet" carbon fiber in the past and maybe didn't realize there is an actual difference between the two. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and understanding the differences will help you make that informed decision, especially given how pricey high quality carbon fiber can be. The terms "dry" and "wet" actually refer to how the product is produced or manufactured and the difference in result are reflected in the weight, strength and other factors of the end product.

The dry carbon fiber manufacturing process involves first placing pieces of carbon into a mold, and then vacuum sealed to allow it cure properly. This method is the most efficient and has a significant weight advantage over the “wet” method. The vacuuming process also ensures that there are fewer pinholes and/or air pockets that form in the carbon. Hence, dry carbon is the highest quality version of carbon fiber products that are produced. This technology was once exclusively used in the aerospace industry, but as manufacturing processes became more affordable, other industries began to adopt this process as well, including the automotive domain.
